Laxmi Niwas Palace (Bikaner)

About Laxmi Niwas Palace

Laxmi Niwas Palace, BikanerThe historical stretch of land covering the area of the back portion of Laxmi Niwas Palace and various quarters of State time is known as Lallgarh. Situated in this stretch of royal apartments is the residence of Late Maharaja Ganga Singh, the maker of modern Bikaner, who personally conceived, foresaw and supervised the construction of his personal residence--The Laxmi Niwas Palace-- a magnificent red sandstone edifice designed by Sir Swinton Jacob in the Anglo-Scenic style. This stately building, great & grand, is built around a central courtyard and is intricately carved from the skirting upto the highest dome. The stone 'jali' work (lattice) is awesome and stunning. The motifs, floral and geometrical, leave you mesmerised. A lace- like work of stone on the edges of the entire roof was devised as a glittering crown on the head of the palace!! The royal palace of Laxmi Niwas Palace has a gigantic principal entrance--The Clock Tower which is secured by guards and evokes memories of old grandeur and splendour.

A long drive flanking the vast lawns with rows of trees, fairly big pools and red sandstone quarters take you to the hotel Laxmi Niwas Palace. The great Portico extends a respectful and dignified welcome to the visitor. The sculptural art on the pillars supporting this amazing high- ceilinged Portico, along with the decorative carving, evokes the senses. The wide retina of stately staircase lead you up to the reception which extends a warmth of hospitality to the visitor. It is the pilot to the extensive hallways and the vast 'chowk' or inner-courtyard, hallowed by the memories of festive occasions and gracious functions of the past.

The huge area of the 'chowk', with a garden in the centre and a beautiful fountain, presents a different angle to view the beauty of the palace. All round this courtyard are rows of columns along the long corridors providing an arresting view. On the walls are hung rare Trophies, images of the sportive hunting hobby of the Rajputs. Opening out into these long corridors are rooms of colossal size, with about ten feet high doors, which have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. The original paintwork arabesque decoration on the walls & ceiling of hotel Laxmi Niwas Palace has been restored by local artists and craftsmen. The rooms have been refurbished with exquisite soft furnishings and the bathrooms have been made ultra-modern keeping in mind the needs of the modern day travellers. The Laxmi Niwas Palace still today commands a grand view. It is a monument of the glorious past, a vista of bygone times, covering almost a century of changes ups and downs. It is indeed the 'Crowning Glory' of Bikaner's forts and palaces.

The Rambagh Palace (Jaipur)

About The Rambagh Palace

The Rambagh Palace, JaipurRambagh was initially, a modest four-room pavilion built for Kesar Badaran, chief lady-in-waiting to Maharani Chandrawatji, in 1835. Later, in 1887, a need for a guest-house cum hunting lodge arose. And Kesar Badaran ka Bagh naturally lent itself to such a transition.

Rambagh Palace however, only achieved the status of a palace when Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II returned to his childhood home in 1925. Rambagh Palace, resplendent in all its 47 acres, was finally converted into a hotel in 1957. The Management was then entrusted to The Taj Group in 1972. The Rambagh Palace has since blossomed in to one of the finest experiences any hotel can offer.

Featured in Peter Coats’ “The Most Beautiful Gardens in the World”, the gardens of Rambagh Palace Hotel are renowned for their elegance and exotic foliage. Initially built for the Zenana (Ladies of the court), the gardens used to attract a variety of exotic birds. Even today, peacocks preen on the lawns, and flocks of migratory birds continue to visit the gardens, transporting you to a place that can only be paradise.

The Front Lawns of Rambagh Palace are abloom with Ashok, Bougainvillea and Lantana Trees. The Oriental Garden is inspired by Chinese motifs and designs. The Mughal Garden has an expansive range of flowers. The Swimming Pool Garden and the Nakhsa Garden of Rambagh Palace Hotel are horticultural wonders in themselves, and the seasonal flowers here, add to the spectrum of colours during winters.

Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur)

About Umaid Bhawan Palace

Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace, JodhpurIf there is one palace that combines architectural extravaganza with aesthetic triumph, it is the Umaid Bhawan Palace. If there is something that is best experienced than described, it is absolutely a stay at the Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace.

From the time of the origin of Jodhpur to the present day, the Rathore capital suffered severe scarcity of water and drought followed with unfailing regularity every third or fourth year. A tradition developed among the Maharajas to alleviate the suffering of people by creating work. The work usually took the form of building canals, roads, temples, stepwells and palaces.

The majority of the 'fine buildings' was actually one single complex! An architectural extravaganza called the Umaid Bhawan Palace – among the biggest private residences in the world! A colossal 347-rooms structure with two monumental wings separated by a central dome soaring to a height of 185 feet!

Maharaja Umaid Singh conceived the Palace as the centerpiece of his massive famine-relief scheme. The acclaimed designs of Henry Lanchester for Cardiff City Hall and Law Courts/Central Hall, Westminster, impressed Maharaja Umaid Singh, and Lutyen's protégé was entrusted with the job.

Furnished with fashionable Art Deco interiors by the Polish artist and decorator, S. Norblin, the Umaid Bhawan Palace consumed one million square feet of the finest marble. The world of Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur contained everything that the royalty required – a private cinema hall, a luxurious swimming pool inlaid with tiles depicting the zodiac, gigantic royal suites, a soaring rotunda, fancy ball rooms, a majestic durbar hall, billiards room, ballrooms, banquet halls, libraries, staff quarters, servant quarters….

In 1977, Umaid Bhawan Palace opened as one of India's grandest luxury hotels.
